Obituary

Irene Marie (McCloskey) Tordone

September 20, 1940 – January 1, 2021

Irene Marie (McCloskey) Tordone passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on January 1, 2021.

For those who knew and loved her, the stars will be less bright, the sunsets not as brilliant, and the world a little darker. Irene was born in 1940 to the late John McCloskey and Kathleen Quinn of Drexel Hill, PA, where she was raised with her two older brothers and two younger sisters. She graduated from Upper Darby High School and attended the Keystone School of Business. She married her high school sweetheart, Joseph “Joe” Tordone Jr., of Upper Darby, PA, in 1962.

Following their wedding, Irene willingly and enthusiastically moved from place to place to support her husband’s career, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Texas. During this time, she held several secretarial jobs and gave birth to three children. In 1974, the Tordone family returned to Pennsylvania where Irene eventually began working as a real estate agent. It was here where she found her passion and ultimately built a home in Malvern, PA that her family cherishes to this day.

Irene loved taking trips to Ocean City, NJ and La Quinta, CA to be with family. She was a spark in any group, a beauty with super humor, a generous soul, and the life of the party. What brought her the most joy, however, was her nine grandchildren. Nothing was so dear to “Nonnie” as her “Magnificent Nine.”

Irene is survived by her husband, Joe Tordone, and her three children: Joseph D. Tordone (Amy), Kathleen L. Elicker (Robert), and Michael Tordone (Marie). She is also survived by her “Magnificent Nine”: Carlie Elicker (Jeffrey Smyth), Nicholas Tordone, Luke Elicker, Matthew Tordone, Kathleen M. Elicker, Kelly Tordone (Brad Anderson), Joseph C. Tordone, Jaclyn Tordone, and Mikey Tordone, as well as her beloved siblings: Richard McCloskey, Kathleen Moore, Larraine Stumm, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her eldest brother, John McCloskey.

The family expresses deep appreciation to the gifted and caring staff at Magnolias of Lancaster and Sunrise of Westtown. Irene endured all the trials, frustrations, and confusion of this terrible disease with a smile and the most contagious laugh. While she cannot be replaced, we are comforted knowing that she has found herself whole again.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s Church, 104 Channing Avenue, Malvern, PA. A viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m.
