Obituary for Walter T. Koch

Walter T. Koch went home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2017. age 94 He is survived by Shirley M. (Schippers) Koch, his loving wife of 71 years. Walter is also survived by Eileen J. Cutler (wife of Edward), Carol M. Vassallo (wife of Paul) and Edward A. Koch (husband of Patricia). In addition, he is survived by grandchildren Michael Koch (husband of Angela), Eric Koch (husband of Brittany), Daniel Koch (husband of Julia) and great grandchildren William, Garrett, Dominic and Jovie. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Kondrath Garrett.

Born January 4, 1923, in Orwigsburg, PA, son of Raymond and Della Koch, he grew up in the Reading PA area, graduating from Muhlenberg High School and Albright College before joining the US Navy and serving in the Pacific theater during World War II. While stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago, he met Shirley, a young nurse-in-training, and they married in 1946. After the war, he earned his PhD in Chemistry from Rutgers University. He worked for American Viscose (later bought by FMC) in Marcus Hook, PA for 25 years, during which time he received several patents for his research. Upon early retirement in 1978, he enjoyed a second career as an antiques dealer, specializing in antique tools and old postcards. Moving to Lima Estates Retirement Community in 1999, after 44 years' residence in Havertown, PA,, he continued selling part time at the antique/flea markets at which he had become a fixture, until the age of 91. Other interests included gardening, reading history, hunting, following the stock market, work on the Residents' Committee at Lima, traveling, crossword puzzles, fishing, bowling. But most of all, Walter enjoyed time he spent with his family and friends. His Christian faith and his family were mainstays of his adult life. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 64 years, serving as teacher and elder and active member of various committees.

A Memorial Service will be held on December 28 at Lima Estates, 411 N. Middletown Rd., Media, PA 19063 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place Dec. 5, 2017 at noon in Drehersville Evangelical Cemetery. Friends are welcome to attend. Arrangements by Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Broomall
