Obituary for Samuel P. Norton, IV

Samuel Purcell Norton, IV, was born on May 15, 1934 in Wheeling, WV. He attended Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling and Middlebury College in Vermont. His major at Middlebury was American Literature which virtually guaranteed periods of unemployement. However. His working years began in 1955 as a reporter with the Wheeliong News-Register and later the Harrisburg Patriot News. He left Harrisburg for Lancaster County where he joined the public relations department of New Holland Machine COmapny, manufacturer of farm equipment. At New Holland, Mr. Norton became acquainted with hay bailers, forage harvesters and manure spreaders. This last labor-saver made Mr. Norton uniquely suited for his next occupation, advertising.

From 1961 to 1973, Mr. Norton was a copywriter with the N.W. Ayer, the advertising agency headquartered in Philadelphia. Mr. Norton also worked at Ayer offices in New York, Boston, Detroit and Chicago creating print and braodcast advertising for accounts that included AT&T, DuPont, General Motors, United Airlines, Air France and the United States Army. In 1973, he became director of advertising at The Fidelity Bank, Philadelphia, supervising campaigns for the bank's consumer, corporate, international and trust and investment departments. He left Fidelity in 1985 to create advertising at the Vanguard Group of Investment Companies. He retired in 1997. He and his wife, Margaret C. Norton (nee Cochran), longtime residents of Newtown Square, are aprent sof Samuel P. Norton, V also of Newtown Square, and Mary Norton O'Donnell of Amelia Island, Fl.

Funeral servcies and interment are private for the family.
