Robert Gillespie Merin, 84, Retired Anesthesiologist

Dr. Robert Gillespie Merin, devoted husband of Barbara R. Merin (pre-deceased) and caring father of Michael Gillespie Merin, Jan Marie Merin, MD, of Houston, TX, and Sarah Louise Merin of Cambridge, MA and grandfather of Katherine Elizabeth Merin of Wayne, PA died on August 27, 2017.  Dr. Merin grew up in Bolton Landing on Lake George, NY where his parents were the medical doctors.  Dr. Merin graduated from the St. Paul’s School in NH, Swarthmore College and Cornell Medical School.  Captain Merin spent two years in the U.S. Army where he served in Fort Polk, Louisiana, and then Fort Sill, Oklahoma before working in academics at Albany Medical College and then Rochester Medical School where he earned an ROI-NIH Grant 1970 – 1981 and in 1972 he won an NIH Research Center Development Award for 1972 – 1977.  From 1974 – 1975, Dr. Merin became a Senior Resident Scientist, Erasmus University, Rotterdam where he could work on pigs’ hearts which was not allowed in the U.S.  During that year Dr. Merin travelled and lectured throughout Europe and most often with his family.  Mike, Jan and Sarah thrived and matured in Dutch schools.  Dr. Merin became an Editor of “Anesthesiology” from 1977 – 1986.  He became a consultant to the FDA in 1982, and was inducted into the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the academic arm of anesthesia, in 1980 and became President of that organization in 1987 and 1988.  He had more than 75 publications from 1966 – 1985.  Dr. Merin was Visiting Professor at most of the U.S. Departments of Anesthesiology, and in most West European countries, and then in the 80’s throughout Japan, Australia and South Africa.  Dr. Merin was recruited first to the University of Texas Medical Center in Houston and then to the Medical College of Georgia where he worked until he moved to South Carolina to retire.  In South Carolina, he was active in tennis, golf, boating and scuba diving.  As an Elder and active member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, he joined an ophthalmology mission group and administered anesthesia in Ghana twice, then Viet Nam, Haiti and Nigeria.  In 2004 Dr. Merin and his wife moved to Wynnewood, PA to be closer to their son, granddaughter and son’s wife, Betsy.  Dr. Merin was a Deacon, in the senior choir, and in the singing for life choir at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (BMPC).  He was active in church volunteer work.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of Robert G Merin, MD, to Lake George Conservancy, 4905 Lake Shore Drive, P.O.
