He attended Drexel College of Engineering, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served with the 45th Infantry "Thunderbird" Division during WW II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the invasion of southern mainland Italy. He was evacuated to North Africa and then returned to the States for further medical treatment and recuperation, where he completed the remainder of his service. His time in the Army came to an end with decorations and a honorable discharge, shortly after V-J day
After the war Peter was able to use his GI benefits to complete his education, graduating from West Chester State Teachers College in 1949. While there as a student, he served as an assistant manager of the Rams football team.
Mr. Mirsch began teaching in Philadelphia at Penn Treaty Junior High School where he met Marion his future wife. His next teaching assignment was at Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical High School where he taught American History, served as Vice Principal and sponsored the Color Guard. He retired from the teaching profession after more than 35 years in the School District of Philadelphia.
Peter and Marion were happily married for 65 years. They lived in Broomall where they lovingly raised their family . Peter enjoyed gardening , family trips to the sea shore, long walks in the woods through the neighborhood, bird watching, painting and bird carving. Peter and Marion enjoyed the simple joys of family life together : dinners around the table, reading a good book, family trips and vacations and sharing holiday traditions.
