Obituary for Florence Finn

Florence Finn
1924-2018
Dorothy Florence Finn of the Belvedere Center in Chester PA, formally of Drexel Hill and Lansdowne, PA passed away at age 93 on January 11th. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Eugene. She is survived by her son David of Sharon Hill PA, daughter Elfie (Michael) Finn-McKenzie of Harrisonburg VA; grandchildren: Kristin (Patrick) Lam of McGaheysville VA and Bethany Finn-McKenzie of Harrisonburg VA; and a great grandson Tristan Lam. She was predeceased by her loving daughter Dorothy Finn.
Florence was born in Pittsburgh PA and grew up in the town of Washington PA. She graduated from Grier School (1942), Washington Seminary (1944), Barnard College (1946) and the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Retailing (1949). As a young woman, she worked for the Joseph Horne Company in Pittsburgh. After marrying Gene she threw her energies into raising their children in Drexel Hill. After the children grew up, Florence worked for Time Life and the Lyons Institute.
Florence and Gene enjoyed their summers at their cottage in Middlesex Beach Delaware. She loved to entertain, often holding teas, dinner parties and bridge club at their home.
Florence was beautiful-- both inside and out, poised, smart, easy going and unpretentious. One of the great joys of her life was sharing time with family, either at the beach cottage in Delaware, at home in Drexel Hill or at the homes of her sister’s and other family members. Until her death she remained close to her sisters Virginia Parmelee and Mary Timmons and her niece Johanna Morris. She loved recalling the experiences she had with family members who had passed away, but whom were never far from her heart.
Florence and Gene spent their retirement years in Lansdowne where they were active in helping with the restoration of the Lower Sweedish Cabin in Drexel Hill. Florence was an active member of the Eastern Delaware County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She enjoyed reading, Public Television, book club, ceramics, historical society and community activities. She was an animal lover and especially loved her cats. She was an advocate for the needs of the mentally challenged, woman’s rights and animal welfare.
A service will be held at the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd, Broomall, on Friday, January 19th at 1pm. Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery.
