LINE, JR.,SAMUEL E. of NEWTOWN SQUARE-WWII NAVY VETERAN AND BELL TELEPHONE EXECUTIVE Samuel Earl Line, Jr., 89, of Newtown Square, Radnor Township, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Janet A. (nee Sauserman), with whom he shared sixty years of marriage. Mr. Line was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1924, the son of Samuel E. and Harriet L. (Thrush). He was a graduate of John Harris High School in Harrisburg and Harvard College, now Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a BS degree in government in 1943. Mr. Line was a decorated veteran of the United States Navy. During World War II, he served on the USS Barnett (APA 5) and saw action in the invasions of Normandy, Southeastern France and Okinawa, Japan. Decorations he received included American, European (two stars) and Asiatic-Pacific (one star) Theater Ribbons and a World War II Victory medal. He was honorably discharged from active duty and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for seventeen years. While on terminal leave from the Navy, Mr. Line was hired by the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. He worked in offices in Harrisburg, Allentown and Pittsburgh before being transferred to Philadelphia in 1968. After a forty year career with Bell Telephone, including seventeen years in Philadelphia, he retired in 1985 as Assistant Vice President of Governmental Relations, a position involving public relations and frequent communication with the state and federal governments. Mr. Line was awarded the Whitney M. Young, Jr., Community Service Award by the Urban League of Philadelphia. Over the years, he was a director and/or officer of many civic and charitable organizations, including the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Urban Leagues, the Community Planning Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania, North City Congress in Philadelphia, the Public Affairs Council of Washington, DC and the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia. He was a long-time member of the Wayne United Methodist Church, where he held several offices, and the Edgmont Country Club. He was a lover of maps, an avid reader with a special interest in history and geography, and an accomplished duplicate bridge player. He enjoyed vacations in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and celebrations with family and friends. In addition to his loving and devoted wife, Mr. Line is survived by his daughter Susan Line Boswell (John) of Downingtown; his three sons John F. of Newtown Square, Robert A. (Debra) of Johnstown, Colorado, and Samuel E. III (Marilyn) of Indianapolis, Indiana; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Diane (Stevens). Mr. Line will be remembered by his family and friends as a respected, intelligent and caring gentleman of integrity and class who had a rich sense of humor. He was deeply devoted to his faith, family and church, and is missed immensely. A visitation for family and friends will be held on June 12, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., immediately followed by a memorial service and celebration of his life, at the Wayne United Methodist Church, 210 South Wayne Avenue, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087. Private LININGER, HAROLD(Hal)of Broomall Presbyterian Village, Broomall, PA, and formerly of Durham, NC, passed away peacefully on May 15th at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was born on August 7, 1934 in Conneaut, OH to Thomas Merwyn and Gertrude Lorena (Mitchell) Lininger. Hal earned a B.A. degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH before relocating to Durham, NC where he met and married Anne Wisnom in 1965. He was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Durham, where he served as a Sunday church school teacher and director, as well as on the worship and memorial garden committees and acted as a lay assistant. For many years his hobbies included working in pen and ink drawing and gardening. He loved to sing hymns, carols and especially belting out happy birthday to family, friends and just about anyone celebrating a birthday. After retiring from the Etch Department of Motorola in Research Triangle Park, Durham, Hal took on numerous activities including being an active member of the Durham Lions Club, volunteering as a family advocate in the ICU waiting rooms at Duke University Hospital, narrating for the North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, doing live broadcasting for the Triangle Radio Reading Service for the blind and reading impaired, both in Raleigh, and became a crisis hotline volunteer. He was preceded in death by his mother Gertrude, father Thomas, wife Anne and long-time friend Florence Schorschinsky. He is survived by four nieces, Nancy (Larry) Stuever of Menomonee Falls, WI, Victoria Wisnom of Lawton, OK, Leslie (Ronald) Dawson of Springfield, PA and Pamela (Thomas) Mueller of Virginia Beach, VA, and two nephews, Robert Wisnom of Moon Township, PA, and Dennis Wisnom of Schenectady, NY, nine great nieces and nephews, Robert (Alison) Wisnom, Patrick (Allison) Wisnom, Scott (Joy) Wisnom, Michael, Jennifer and Jon Stuever, Jessica (Mitch) Tate, Brian and Tracy Dawson. and four great, great nieces and nephews, Eric, Ava, Schaffer and Harper Wisnom. David was a longtime resident of Delaware County. Dave was born in Salem, Massachusetts and moved to Lansdowne, in Delaware County in 1970. He attended Lansdowne-Aldan H. S. and began working for Acme Markets at the age 17. He continued with Acme for 30 years. He moved to Morrisville, PA. 11 years ago and began working with Giant Food Stores. Dave was the devoted husband of the late Theresa ( nee Rinaldi) who passed away suddenly in 1994. Dave had a love for Philadelphia sports and in his teens and early adult years was an avid hockey player. He was employed by the US Navy as a Estimator/Plumber for the US Navy for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He then was employed as a school bus driver (Bus #9) for the Marple Newtown High School for 17 years, retiring in 2008. He was a veteran of the Korean War in the US Army reaching the rank of Cpl as a Turret Artillery Mechanic. He enjoyed helping his kids, grandkids and friends with all of there needs. He was a former coach in the Larchmont Little League, and he himself was active in club sports as a youth. He was married to the former Dorothy (nee Miller), they were married in June of 1955 and she passed away in March of 2002. She attended Pierce Business College. She worked for Quick & Bros. Real Estate in Philadelphia during the war years. She worked at a doctors office, in banking and was a private secretary at Boeing Vertol for 10 years before she retired. She made natural tree ornaments with the Brandywine Museum, decorating the 1984 Nancy and Ronald Reagan White House Christmas tree. Alva's intrests also included quilting, knitting, handiwork, a lifelong love of gardening and some merit winning photography. She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran church in Springfield involved with vacation bible school the church newsletter, widows group and treasurer of the V. I. M. group. In 1946 Rodney Brown patented the industry-changing 'hot-melt' adhesives that still bind the world's paperbacks and magazines. Having worked on modern can coatings and automotive finishes, and being both rarely knowledgable and outgoing, Rodney was tapped to call on customers and ultimately became DuPont's Automotive Sales Manager in Detroit and consultant to car makers in Brazil and Venezuela. Rodney was active in Boy Scouting and a School Board member in Havertown, PA and a deacon in Kirk-in-the-Hills in Bloomfield Hills, MI. After retirement he worked with International Executive Service Corp to improve auto finishing operations in Korea and Mexico and then became a stockbroker, joining Smith Barney. He coached many sports including 9th grade football, 7th grade baseball and high school lacrosse. He was longtime swim coah, Strath Haven H.S. Boys for over 20 years with back-to-back AA State Champions in 1994 and 1995. Over 30 years manager and swim coach at Springfield Swim Club (Summer Delco League "A" Division Champs for many years) also coached at the Community "Y" in Lansdowne and the Eyre Drive "Y" in Chester & Wallingford SEADEVILS, he was named National Federation Scholastic Coaches Assn. Boys Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year in 1996. His swimmers will remember him for playing Tina Turner music to prepare for meets and loudly yelling "Cheese and Crackers" when they made a mistake. He would want to be thought of as a coach who cared about all of his swimmers or players, not just focusing on the stars. He was a member of Covenant UM Church, where he served as Usher and Lay Leader. He loved his daughter, step-daughters and their families especially his six grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time in Avalon, N.J., especially breakfast at the Fishin' Pier. He overcame many health obstacles, but rarely complained. Peggy was born to German immigrants Paul and Gertrude Zimmerman and was raised in S.W. Philadelphia where she graduated from John Bartram High School in 1946. She worked for the Wilkening Co. for several years until she met and married her husband Carl in 1951. They moved to Springfield in 1953 where she lived until her death. She had a very talented singing voice and loved music. But her real love was providing for her husband and family and being at home with her four legged friends. She loved the Lord and always found a way to witness to people about Christ. She was a faithful member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and the Calvary Lutheran Church in Havertown where she sang in the choir for many years. She enjoyed volunteering at the church, the Springfield Swim Club and at the Colonial Playhouse in Aldan. Her love and compassion for animals, feeding and taking in strays, was well known to her family and friends. She rescued and owned many pets over the years and always provided them with a loving home. This was her legacy. She was pre-deceased by her son Christopher who died in 1991. She had worked as a waitress at the White Tower and the Terminal Cafe at 69th Street. She then worked as a waitress in the Lancaster area at Sambo's, Denny's and lastly the Deluxe Diner on N. Price Street. During World War II, she worked at the Philadelphia Arsenal refurbishing shells for the war effort. She had attended Covenant United Methodist Church in Lancaster, PA, but most recently was attending Christ United Methodist Church in Broomall.
